Objective: Position the public broadcasting community as a legitimate player in the education technology agenda of the Clinton Administration, while supporting PBS' continuous effort to raise millions of dollars in funding for the conversion of analog to digital broadcasting spectrum.
Strategy & Execution: Our goal was to help PBS capitalize on its reputation as a leader in conventional educational broadcasting and recast itself a "21st Century -- digital" educational content provider in the eyes of the Administration, Congress and the public. The backbone of our strategy was the creation and immediate execution of a project we named PBS Cyber Olympics. PBS Cyber Olympics was an educational online site to complement the Olympic Winter Games. It created a venue in which kids could watch events in the evening and then participate in educational exercises based on those events in class the next day.
Results: The idea was received so warmly that the Vice President of the United States invited the head of PBS to a national conference to announce the initiative. The campaign succeeded in aiding PBS to receive the federal appropriations necessary to make the conversion.
